چکیده

The rules of soft-collinear effective theory can be used naı̈vely to write hard scattering cross-sections as convolutions of separate hard, jet, and soft functions. One condition required to guarantee the validity of such a factorization is the infrared safety of these functions in perturbation theory. Using e+e− angularity distributions as an example, we propose and illustrate an intuitive method to test this infrared safety at one loop. We look for regions of integration in the sum of Feynman diagrams contributing to the jet and soft functions where the integrals become infrared divergent. Our analysis is independent of an explicit infrared regulator, clarifies how to distinguish infrared and ultraviolet singularities in pure dimensional regularization, and demonstrates the necessity of taking zero-bins into account to obtain infrared-safe jet functions.

Nonperturbative Corrections in Resummed Cross Sections

We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation th...

Determining the Factorizability of Hard Scattering Cross-Sections

The rules of soft-collinear effective theory can be used naı̈vely to write hard scattering cross-sections as convolutions of separate hard, jet, and soft functions. We describe an intuitive method to determine, at a given order in perturbation theory, whether these functions are truly infrared safe or not and, thus, whether or not the cross-sections factorize. Using angularity distributions as a...

Double Pomeron Jet Cross Sections

We treat hadron-hadron collisions where the final state is kinematically of the kind associated with double-pomeron-exchange (DPE) and has large transverse momentum jets. We show that in addition to the conventional factorized (FDPE) contribution, there is a non-factorized (NDPE) contribution which has no pomeron beam jet. Within a simple model we compute DPE-two-jet total and differential cros...

Energy and Color Flow in Dijet Rapidity Gaps

When rapidity gaps in high-pT dijet events are identified by energy flow in the central region, they may be calculated from factorized cross sections in perturbative QCD, up to corrections that behave as inverse powers of the central region energy. Although power-suppressed corrections may be important, a perturbative calculation of dijet rapidity gaps in pp̄ scattering successfully reproduces t...

Calculations of Single-inclusive Cross Sections and Spin Asymmetries in Pp Scattering∗

Single-inclusive reactions in pp scattering, such as pp → γX , pp → πX , pp → jetX , play an important role in QCD. At sufficiently large produced transverse momentum, pT , QCD perturbation theory (pQCD) can be used to derive predictions for these reactions. Since high pT implies large momentum transfer, the cross section may be factorized at leading power in pT into convolutions of long-distan...
